Whites Brothers

Bear and Old Friend

The Polar Bear is the friendliest of all the inhabitants of the Arctic. Although it was snowing hard at the time this picture was taken, you can clearly see the bears (to the right) are out fellowshipping with their neighbours. The bear in the foreground is about to pat a seal that he has not seen in ages, on the head, a common local expression of affection. Bears have long memories and are able to recognize seals and other animals they have not seen in many years. Some scientists suggest that a bear may make as many as 10,000 close friends in a lifetime.

The Whites Brothers

Bears love to harmonize. Polar bear music anthologists have identified as many as 35 distinct regional styles of Polar music. It is believed that the Inuit practice of throat singing came from early attempts to mimic the Polar Bear harmony popular in the Western Arctic. Over the last few years human music from the south has had a noticeable influence on the styles that are popular with the bears, however a distinctive form of Polar Blues is favoured by most bear entertainers. The White Brothers often play at The Polar Bear Lounge, and are featured on the cover of the bar menu.
